Nigerian singer and rapper Candy Bleakz has spoken publicly about her sexuality, stating that she identifies as demisexual.

The revelation has drawn attention because demisexuality is a term that remains less familiar to many people. It generally describes people who experience sexual attraction only after developing a strong emotional connection with another person.

Candy Bleakz, whose real name is Blessing Akiode, is known for her street-pop and hip-hop music and has built her career through projects including Fire and Better Days. She has also spoken in previous interviews about her personal experiences, ambitions and journey in the Nigerian music industry.

Her latest comments add a personal dimension to the public image of the artiste, who has previously described herself as reserved and discussed how her experiences have shaped her music and personality.

Demisexuality falls within the asexual spectrum. Being demisexual does not, by itself, indicate the gender of a person's romantic or sexual attraction. The defining feature is the relationship between emotional connection and sexual attraction.

Candy Bleakz has previously discussed relationships and romance in interviews. In a 2022 interview with Aura, she described the type of partner she would like as someone who is driven and a good person, while saying at the time that she was not in a relationship.

The latest statement comes as Candy continues to establish herself as one of Nigeria's female voices in street-pop and hip-hop. Her career has included collaborations with artistes such as Simi, Zlatan and Blaqbonez, while international publications have also profiled her music and ambitions.

Editorial note: I could not independently locate the original interview or video containing the specific “I am demisexual” statement in indexed sources. The statement should therefore be attributed to Candy Bleakz as supplied, rather than presented as independently verified beyond her reported comments.
