A 36-year-old man has been arrested following the death of a 63-year-old woman found inside New York City’s Central Park, with police now saying the victim suffered head trauma.
The suspect, identified by police as Jonathan Robles, was taken into custody Sunday evening and booked on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon, according to NBC New York.
The woman was found near East Drive and East 74th Street after police received a report of an unconscious person at about 9:40 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Early reports said the woman had multiple stab wounds. However, police later retracted that statement and said investigators had determined that she had suffered head trauma. The change in the police account means the exact circumstances and cause of death remain subject to further investigation and medical examination.
The New York City Medical Examiner's Office was at the scene as investigators worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. Police said the woman did not have identification when she was found.
Police also said the victim may have been experiencing homelessness. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a possible motive for the killing.
The case remains under investigation as detectives work to establish the events leading to the woman's death and the circumstances connecting the suspect to the incident.
