Rain eased in Bangkok on Sunday, September 27, but flooding continued in several low-lying parts of Thailand’s capital, leaving thousands of residents in temporary shelters after days of heavy downpours.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration declared the capital a disaster-affected area on Saturday after nearly 300 millimetres of rain fell over a 48-hour period. Major roads were flooded, while some vehicles were left partly submerged.

Authorities have established hundreds of temporary shelters for residents displaced by the flooding. The BMA initially reported that about 4,200 people had moved into shelters, while a later update put the number of evacuees at nearly 4,900, with around 52,000 households affected.

Despite the improvement in rainfall, several neighbourhoods remained severely affected on Sunday. Local reports said some roads were still impassable, while residents in low-lying communities continued moving belongings to higher ground and seeking assistance.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said the break in heavy rain was allowing authorities to accelerate efforts to drain canals and reduce water levels. Officials said flooding was expected to gradually subside if significant additional rainfall did not occur.

The flooding has also disrupted transportation and businesses across the capital. Thailand’s Meteorological Department warned that moderate to heavy rain could still occur in parts of the country on Sunday, although conditions were expected to improve from Monday.

Nationwide, at least eight people have reportedly died in flood-related incidents over the past 10 days, according to the latest reports. The situation has renewed concerns over the impact of intense seasonal rainfall on communities across Thailand.
